Yacht Club helps Watchet Rowers complete challenge
In June the sea rowing section of Barry Yacht Club hosted a visit by Watchet Sea Rowing Club, who were attempting a spon¬sored row between Barry and Watchet. The row was in support of the town carnival held in July.
The rowers travelled about 15 miles across the strong currents of the channel, In perfect calm conditions the two Watchet boats departed Barry about 1.30pm, accom¬panied by the Barry club's new Celtic row¬ing longboat and two escort vessels.
At the half way mark, the Watchet boats were met by their local safety boats and the Barry boats returned to the club, via Porthkerry Bay and the old harbour.
The crossing was com¬pleted in three hours 45 minutes and it was subse¬quently agreed that this should be an annual sponsored event between sea rowing clubs on either side of the channel Barry Yacht Club, contact Roger Donkin on 01446 733381.
