Barry Yacht Club
Promoting Affordable Sailing for All
History
If you have visited BYC before then you are sure to recognise the white and blue Victorian style Clubhouse, but notice also the scaffolding around the Lifeboat House and the new dinghy store appearing in the background! Yes, things are changing at Barry, thanks to a £500,000 development plan, funded through Sportlot. The Vale of Glamorgan and the Welsh Development Agency, alongside building fund contributions from members, over the past five years.
In its 76th year, the Club is not just getting a facelift, but looking to the future with a new lease on life.
Since the Club was first formed in 1928, it has seen many changes in direction, from starting as the Barry Yacht and Motor Boat Club, offering racing for sailing and motor boats, to the heady days of dinghy racing in the 60’s and 70’s when extensive fleets of Albacores, National 18s and Mirrors could be seen on the startline off Jackson’s Bay.
In later years the Club has focused more on cruising, with many members embarking on long distance voyages, whilst others continue to enjoy evening and weekend club racing.
The Club continues to offer support, encouragement and training to get you afloat in a friendly family atmosphere.
There is always room for new members and new ideas. Recently the Club has opened a rowing section and will be racing increasingly popular Gigs.
To keep local watersports activities affordable, there are several classes of membership, from associate to full family members.
See the Joining BYC page for more details.
